When we were choosing our bed, we fell for an Ercol frame in oak. I’m not usually a huge fan of lighter woods, but for some reason this one stole our heart; especially as we’d decided to go with dark grey walls.
I drew the line at getting the matching bedside tables, however, as it felt like it would just be too much for me. So we debated black, white and metal options for a long time with nothing seeming quite right. Then the Key Side Table from Hem came onto our radar – and it came with oak tops and black legs. Sold. I love the simplicity of the design, the spacious top that’s easily large enough for a good book, and the mix of materials. We have a black magazine rack in our bedroom, and this is the piece that makes it all ‘fit’.
Hem is a German retailer and you can order online, but we discovered they’ve got a pop up shop in Covent Garden. We popped in over the Christmas break (whilst everyone else was in Selfridges fighting over shoes) and came home with them the same day after doing a little quality check. Whilst in the shop, I had to stop myself from walking out with five of these little guys. They’re hand-turned and silky smooth to the touch. Plus their little faces and bodies are just too sweet. I might go back and treat myself to one at the end of January…
They also have a great selection of modern textiles. I’ve been banned from buying any more blankets for the time being, or else I would now own the Rain, Brick, Kenno, and Arch throw in various colours.
So long story short, if you’re looking for good quality furniture that’s designed to stand the wear and tear of everyday living, or want something pretty to freshen up your home, check out Hem. They’re easily one of my new favourite places to shop.
